HOOD RIVER, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - Police said they’ve taken one person into custody after a shooting at a home in Hood River, Oregon.

The Hood River Police Department released a statement on social media Thursday afternoon saying they were responding to the scene of an “active shooter situation” near a Dairy Queen and a Safeway where residents were being evacuated.

In a later statement at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, police clarified they were responding to a situation at a private home in the area.

When officers arrived to the home on a 911 call, a person inside the home fired several shots at officers.

Police said the shooter was contained to the home and officers were in a standoff with him as they tried to convince him to come outside.

Several area schools were put on lockdown during the incident.

The school district said at about 2 p.m. Thursday that lockdowns at nearby schools were lifted because “law enforcement agencies located and surrounded the suspect.”

At 10 p.m., Hood River police said a male suspect had been taken into custody.

Hood River is about 70 miles east of Portland and 25 miles west of The Dalles.
