Boy, 14, charged with murder in deadly 2023 South City shooting

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) - A 14-year-old boy, certified as an adult, has been charged in a shooting that left a woman dead in South City in 2023.

The Circuit Attorney’s Office has charged 14-year-old Brian Wellington with murder, attempted robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. Wellington was arrested and is being held without bond.

Wellington and another suspect, 14, were previously accused of shooting 38-year-old Kay Johnson in the 4700 block of Compton on January 24, 2023. Johnson was found shot to death inside her car.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police say the 14-year-old was arrested in St. Louis County. The other suspect was arrested on January 28.

Both teens are being held in the St. Louis County Juvenile Detention Center.
