St. Louis CITY SC wins inaugural home game in front of sold-out crowd
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) - St. Louis CITY SC’s home opener began at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday against Charlotte FC. CITY SC won against Charlotte FC 3-1, making them the fourth expansion team in MLS history to win its first two games.
CITY SC started the match with a lot of energy, which matched the crowd in the stadium.
However, it was Charlotte FC with the first goal of the night, and the first MLS goal in CITYPARK, just before minute 25.
Then a goal was scored for CITY SC but was ruled an “own goal,” meaning a member of Charlotte FC scored on their own goal in minute 41.
CITY SC capitalized handball in the Charlotte FC box that gave them a penalty kick to push ahead 2-1 just before halftime.
CITY SC scored again in the 69th minute. João Klauss capitalized on a pass from a Charlotte FC defender back to their goalie, pulling the team ahead 3-1.
“So very proud of the boys and just love to now be part of the celebrations in St. Louis,” Coach Bradley Carnell said after the game.
A notable substitution for CITY SC was Miguel Perez, 17, one of CITY’s homegrown players. He came into the game in minute 87. This game was also mentioned by the MLS as a must-watch game in 2023, as both clubs are new to the league with Charlotte entering its second year.
CITY SC’s first match as an MLS club was on Feb. 25, where they won with a thrilling late-game goal by João Klauss. The game finished 3-2, with CITY SC taking their first game and their first win. After beating Charlotte, CITY SC is tied with Seattle Sounders FC for first place in the Western Conference.

Before the game kicked off, fans gathered outside of CITYPARK stadium to enjoy the weather and prepare for the game.
