Man facing murder charge in connection to shooting that killed mother of 5 at Ferguson gas station

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Charges unsealed over the weekend name the man police arrested in connection with the killing of a mother of five and the injury of a man at a Ferguson gas station last month.

St. Louis County Prosecutors charged Marcus Evans with second-degree murder — felony murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. Evans is being held at the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $2 million cash-only, no 10% bond. Police announced Evan’s arrest on Thursday, but had not named him.

Around midnight on June 30, Ferguson police were called for a double shooting at the BP gas station on South Florissant Road and Woodstock Road. At the scene, police say they found two people who had been shot.

Shakeela Martin, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. A man had been critically injured and was taken to an area hospital.

A Ferguson police affidavit says investigators reviewed electronic records associated with Evan’s cell phone and a vehicle associated with him. Investigators say the vehicle was in the area when the shooting happened, and Evans admitted to being in that vehicle at the time. Surveillance video also captured Evans and his vehicle in the area, court records say.

Early police reports indicate there was an argument inside the gas station shortly before the shooting.

Police told First Alert 4 two of Martin’s children were with her at the time of the shooting. They said she had taken them there to buy slushies. As Martin was walking back to her car, she was shot and killed.

The Ferguson police chief and the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney are expected to hold a press conference regarding the arrest and charges at 10 a.m. on Monday.
